Speech Clarity and Sound Development

Being understood is a big part of a child’s confidence and everyday interactions. If a child has difficulty with certain speech sounds, their clarity may be affected—making it harder for others to understand them. At Big Little Voices Speech Pathology, we help children develop clearer, more accurate speech through personalised, engaging therapy.

Articulation errors

Articulation refers to how individual speech sounds are physically produced. Some children may struggle to pronounce certain sounds clearly, resulting in errors like sound substitutions (e.g., saying “tar” instead of “car”) or omissions. These challenges are common and often improve with focused support.

Through fun, targeted activities, we help children learn the correct placement and movement of the tongue, lips, and mouth to produce sounds accurately. Improving articulation helps boost clarity and builds confidence in communication.

Phonological Process Errors

Phonological processes are patterns of sound errors that many young children use as their speech develops. For example, a child might simplify words by dropping final sounds (e.g., saying “ca” for “cat”). While these patterns are typical in early development, they may need intervention if they continue past a certain age or significantly impact how well a child is understood.

We work with your child to gently reduce these patterns through structured, play-based therapy. Our goal is to support your child in developing age-appropriate speech patterns that enhance clarity and confidence.
